With this program the ASSAI Cello Quartet approaches different dimensions of the repertoire of Johann Sebastian Bach. Since the "cello quartet" setting did not exist as such at the time of Bach, a few representative works have been transcribed for four cellos. Bach himself made daily use of arranging music: he played Vivaldi's string quartets on organ and changed the instrumentation of his pieces depending on the instruments available. He also made transcriptions of his own works for other instruments. As an example, a piece contained in this program: the Cello Suite V, originally written for cello solo was arranged for lute by Bach himself.
