SUMMARY:Embrujo Español
DESCRIPTION:Cultuurcentrum Hasselt – 15.00 \nCedric Honings\, guitar \n  \nA Spanish musical enchantment with works by De Falla\, Rodrigo and Ravel – symphoniaASSAI is pleased to welcome Limburg talent Cedric Honings as a soloist in one of the most evocative Spanish compositions for guitar and orchestra: the Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo. \n\n\nWhen Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) moved from Spain to Paris in 1907 to broaden his musical horizons and experience the avant-garde\, he found a city full of music that was inspired by music from his homeland . He came into contact with composers such as Claude Debussy\, Maurice Ravel\, Paul Dukas and Igor Stravinsky. During his Parisian years De Falla gained new insights on how to write music that evokes the atmosphere of a place\, but at the same time he managed to convey a deeper message in a universal language. \nThe musical style of Joaquín Rodrigo (1901-1999) was far from the great trends in the European musical developments of the 20th century; it is rather a reflection of Spanish classical and folk music\, which often use old melodies as a theme. Following the example of his musical Spanish predecessors\, Isaac Albéniz\, Manuel De Falla\, Enrique Granados and Joaquín Turina\, Rodrigo also traveled to Paris to enrol at the conservatory with Paul Dukas. In the French capital he became friends with Maurice Ravel\, Darius Milhaud and Arthur Honegger\, and met as well his future wife. \nMaurice Ravel (1875-1937) was born in the French Pyrenees\, just a dozen kilometers from the Spanish border; a geographical border that he often crossed in his music. Although he spent most of his life in Paris\, the atmosphere of Ravel’s music reflects a profound influence of the Spanish musical heritage\, which he already received as a child through the folk songs that his Basque mother sang for him. Many of his compositions are accurate musical representations of Spain\, a country he so rarely visited\, but still seemed to know so well. \n\nprogramme \nJoaquín RODRIGO | Dos miniaturas andaluzas \nJoaquín RODRIGO | Concierto de Aranjuez | Cedric Honings\, guitar \nMaurice RAVEL | Pavane pour une infante défunte \nManuel DE FALLA | El Amor Brujo \n\nTickets via Cultuurcentrum Hasselt

SUMMARY:Transcendence - composer's last words
DESCRIPTION:Cultuurcentrum Hasselt – 20.00 \nRoeland HENDRIKX\, clarinet \n  \nTranscendence brings three masterpieces from the oeuvre of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Robert Schumann that were written during the last years of their lives. symphoniaASSAI looks into the state of mind of these masters during their last days. What crossed their minds when they put these notes on paper? Were they aware of the little time they had left? \nBoth The Magic Flute and the Clarinet Concerto are witnesses of Mozart’s last months of life. The Magic Flute was written in the spring of 1791 and was premiered in the Vienna Freiitte Theater on the 30th of September. Just in the same week he started his Concerto for clarinet and orchestra which he composed and completed at a lightning speed on October 7th. It was performed for the first time by clarinet player Anton Stadler in Prague on 16th October. This was a particularly productive year in which he wrote some of his most important works. However\, this fertile period ended relatively abruptly when he became seriously ill and less than two months later\, on December 5\, 1791\, he died at the age of 35. The Requiem he was working on was left unfinished. \nThe Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major\, Op. 97\, also known as the Rhenish\, is the last symphony composed by Robert Schumann. Although his 4th symphony was later published\, it concerns a rework of an earlier composition from 1841. Schumann completed his third symphony in just five weeks\, between November 2 and December 9\, 1850. \nprogramme \nWolfgang Amadeus MOZART | Ouverture The Magic Flute \nWolfgang Amadeus MOZART | Clarinet Concerto in A Major \n— \nRobert SCHUMANN | Symphony nr.3 “Rhenisch” \nTickets via Cultuurcentrum Hasselt

SUMMARY:Footprints | Mendelssohn in the footsteps of Mozart
DESCRIPTION:CC Hasselt – 20.00 \n  \nsymphoniaASSAI looks with Footprints into the genesis of three masterpieces from Mozart and Mendelssohn. \nThe Hebrides overture\, as well as the Piano concerto and the Scottish symphony\, saw the light during a journey that would mean an indelible impact on their generation. \nMendelssohn and Mozart have more in common than might appear at first sight. Their music breathes the same purity\, naturalness and spontaneity. Mendelssohn\, who was named by Schumann as “the Mozart of the 19th century”\, completed\, as Mozart did\, some of his works entirely in his head before putting them down on paper. They both displayed an exceptional musical talent at a very early age. The German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)\, who got to know both composers as young children\, immediately compared Mendelssohn with the prodigy Mozart and was very impressed by his tremendous skills in improvisation and sight-reading\, describing them as “bordering on the miraculous.” Unfortunately both composers would die an early death but despite their short existences\, both Mozart and Mendelssohn left us an impressive oeuvre. \nFootprints takes us on a fascinating journey through the origins of three compositions that are regarded as milestones in the history of music. A discovery that is trying to catch a glimpse of the inspiration that led to these masterpieces. We follow Mendelssohn in the footsteps of his 53-years-older musical twin brother and rediscover their shared fascination about the immortal Bach. \nMore info and tickets here! \nprogramme \nFelix MENDELSSOHN | Hebrides overture \nWolfgang A. MOZART | Piano concerto nº 11\, Marteen Lingier\, soloist \nFelix MENDELSSOHN | Scottish symphony nº3

SUMMARY:Nordiske lyder | Scandinavian music for strings
DESCRIPTION:CC Hasselt \n  \nAlthough music from Scandinavia is in line with the musical traditions elsewhere in Europe\, it is at the same time imbued with its own folk culture\, breathing the width of the Nordic landscape. \n  \nFor Scandinavian people\, the sound of string instruments has always been connected with the essence of music. Already in the 12th century itinerant minstrels accompanied their songs with fiddle sounds. In the centuries that followed popular melodies echoed often in the streets through the sound of a violin. Not by coincidence Norway is the land of the famous Hardanger Fiddle\, a traditional instrument that inspired Grieg to write his works. \nJean Sibelius\, Carl Nielsen and Edvard Grieg are indeed coming from three different countries (Finland\, Denmark and Norway respectively)\, but they share a pronounced patriotism and undeniable interest in their own folk music. Their works are representative of the late romantic language and manifest a strong historical sense of identity. \nWith Nordiske lyder symphoniaASSAI unites some wonderful Nordic compositions from the 19th and 20th century together in a beautiful programme for string orchestra. \nMore info and tickets here! \nprogramme \nJean SIBELIUS | Andante Festivo \nJean SIBELIUS | Impromptu \nCarl NIELSEN | Lille suite \nEdvard GRIEG | Bådnlåt \nEdvard GRIEG | To elegiske melodier \nEdvard GRIEG | Holberg Suite tid
