SUMMARY:Voyages | Following the tracks of Adolphe Sax
DESCRIPTION:Conservatorium Hasselt – 11.00 \nKoen Dries\, soloist \n  \n84 Rue Myrha\, Paris. It was in a dusty workshop in the north of the French capital where the saxophone began a world tour in 1842. \nThe Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax (1814-1894) had just moved from Brussels to Paris in the hope of finding more recognition for his work. The saxophone’s first trip was a success: composers such as Berlioz\, Bizet and Massenet immediately showed interest in this new sound and had the instrument featuring regularly in their new works. Only at the beginning of the 20th century it earned a place in the classical repertoire through the colorful orchestrations by Ravel\, Jongen\, Prokofiev and Debussy\, and from there catapulted to world fame through its regular appearance in jazz orchestras. \nIn Voyages saxophonist Koen Dries and symphoniaASSAI follow the tracks of Adolphe Sax\, honouring the saxophone’s inventor and the French world of sound that the instrument embraced during its first years of existence. \nThis production is part of the Doctorate in Arts that saxophonist Koen Dries is pursuing as Candidate for the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek – Vlaanderen\, in collaboration with Kunstenplatform Brussel\, School of Arts Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel and Vrije Universiteit Brussel. \nMore info and tickets:   jat.info.concerten@gmail.com  –  0475 71 69 70 \nConcert in collaboration with J.A.T.

SUMMARY:ASSAI Cello Quartet - Helikon concert
DESCRIPTION:Conservatorium Hasselt \n  \nA New Year’s invitation to dance through the voice of four cellos: folk dances\, waltzes and tangos from J.S. Bach to Astor Piazzolla \n  \nA great deal of the European repertoire finds its roots in dance music. In the form of ancient folk songs or court dances\, melodies and rhythms filed social life and gathered people together. \nDuring the Baroque era concerts started taking place\, first in royal chambers\, then in front of big audiences. Although music was no longer meant to accompany movements\, composers kept often the original names and features of those dances until today. \n  \nStarting with one of J.S.Bach masterpieces\, the Chaconne in d minor\, this program brings a collection of dance-inspired works from the quartet member’s countries of origin (Germany\, Belgium and Spain) written by W. Fitzenhagen\, J. Jongen and I. Albéniz respectively. Closing with a set of Three Tangos originally composed in 2009 for cello quartet by Harry Schröder\, this musical journey brings us overseas as well with the master of this very same dance: Astor Piazzolla. \n  \nJ.S. BACH | Chaconne in d minor from Partita No. 2 for solo violin \, BWV 1004 \n\nFITZENHAGEN | Konzertwalzer op.31\nJONGEN | Deux pièces op. 89 | Légende – Danses\nALBÉNIZ | Tango\nPIAZZOLLA | Oblivion\nPIAZZOLLA | Invierno Porteño\nSCHRÖDER | Three Tangos for cello quartet
